I think the real failure with this captain was not? so much the accident itself but how he handled the emergency as it unfolded. If I remember correctly the order to abandon ship came 1 hour 15 minutes after impact. Also... The italian coast gaurd got wind of the accident by a passenger calling for help, and in turned called the captain.

Until official report it is hard to say what happened. As I understood from most of the reports over mass media it was Captain's intention to pass island close. Shocking unawareness. Passing couple of 100 meters from shore line is unacceptable to any navigator unless during pilotage or emergency. My navigator's mind can not believe that all what happened is just due to bravado of any crew member. Thus I still consider possibility of navigational? error while very doubtful about it.

The manoeuvre does not imply he was giving way to the port side vessel, unless there are fishing vessels/trawlers or sailers without AIS that we can't see here. The late starboard? turn would rather imply the OOW wanted to go close to the island and steered too late, getting too far hitting a shallow. I have not found any charts, but it would be interesting to see the depths there.

There was a story posted by Reuters this morning that includes a very heated exchange between the Italian Coast Guard and the captain of the Costa Concordia. It seems to show the captain abandoning the ship while many (or most) of the passengers were still aboard. Yikes. Not good.
