Shot Big & Small Bore Animal Silhouette Competition back in the 80-90's. I remember the interest I had shooting with my Cowboy Brothers & Sisters? Picked up a pair of fix sight 45LC Rugers and Stagecoach 12 Ga. Side by Side's and did some 15 yard practice. Not as easy as shooting 5 shots in 2 minutes! Looked for a lever rifle, but? there's was a shortage in my area? Seems that all the SASS shooters were buying up most of the supplies in my part of the State? 2012..it's 38 Spl everything? Sheesh!

Really? cool stuff. Would be really cool if they incorporated reloading the firearms into the skill set. If you were to ever use a lever gun in a defensive capacity (certainly doable), reloading it quickly and safely would be a crucial skill.

It's a single action pistol, so unless the hammer is cocked there is no real danger of the firearm going off. Plus it had been safety checked and it was done in a safe area. I'm not really sure why I'm responding to your comment, as I'm sure? you already know all this.

I don't think he has larger than average hands, the grips on those old-style single action cowboy revolvers are just plain small. When my old man bought a Colt SSA, we were both taken aback by how small the grips were. I had to really choke up on the handle to keep my pinky from falling underneath. Regardless of the small grip, with a 7.5" barrel in 45LC, my old man's SAA is the? most accurate pistol I have ever shot.

That's what I've practiced all? my life. You hold a revolver LIGHT and a pistol TIGHT. was a fine revolver shot before I joined the ARMY for 21yrs. Became a even better PISTOL shot in there. 1911 45ACP to the M-9 9mm. Got away from revolvers for a time and had difficulty the first day back until I remembered the above. 9's and 10's was the result after I applied it. Great Stuff. Not much I haven't been doing already. Been shooting Single and Double action revolvers lets just say a LONG time. I'm always open for improvement however. I wish he would have mentioned GRIP PRESSURE. How tight you hold the revolver I get? tight enough not to drop the fool thing in the dirt, and also what caliber and load and bullet weight. All of which result in FELT RECOIL. What I was Hopeing for was in comparrison to the grip you use on a PISTOL. PISTOL TIGHT- REVOLVER LIGHT?

My only concern with the advice offered here is using the thumb against the recoil sheild. As a speed advantage for competition, OK, but this transmits the recoil load right back through bone and cartiledge of the thumb. Why sacrifice your joints for a few points? Sorry, I'll let my guns rock in my? grip, compressing cartiledge is dumb, especially if you shoot a lot.

Ballistol is great stuff, you can use it on all metal, on? wood, use it to kill ticks on dogs, use it to disinfect wounds and if there's nothing else you can even drink it ! Hoppes #9 is better on smokeless, but,? if you shoot a lot of smokeless I'd recommend Kroil. You can buy small cans of it, but you can also search for gallon cans...not that expensive and it will last for years. Kroil is great for cleaning guns...learned that from a top pistol smith.

Have a few questions about Ballistol: 1)Can you clean the same way using Ballistol for guns using smokeless ammo or is Hoppes #9 better in that case? 2) Can you use Ballistol straight without diluting with water when cleaning after smokeless? 3) Can Ballistol be used safely on brass like that on the reciever of a? '66 Uberti yellowboy (I've read in a couple of posts not to use it on brass)? Thanks in advance for any reply.-----Ron

Really great information! I've always used Hoppes but it sounds like Ballistol is better to maintain the finish on the firearm. I'm going to pick up a can this weekend and see how it does. No, Ballistol was developed by the German Military before WWI. They wanted a n oil that would work with metal, wood and leather. Ballistol has a lot of commercial uses. In Germany it is used a lot as a lubricant on restaurant equipment. It is good for muzzleloaders because it is a water soluble petroleum product, and because it is one of the most effective corrosion protectants on? the market.

Bore brushes only loosen the crud up, they don't clean the barel. I still use brushes for tough crud, but I use jags and patches rather than slotted tips and patches to clean the bore. Jags give the patch full? contact with the bore, as opposed to slotted tips, which can provide very little patch pressure to the fouling.

Nice. I've always been kinda intimidated by black powder guns simply because so many people complain about how horrible they are to clean and all. But seeing this, it really doesn't look like THAT big of a chore - a bit more time-consuming and perhaps a little more messy, but the principle isn't really THAT different from what I go through in cleaning, say, my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 after shooting? corrosive surplus ammo. .44-40 and .38-40 are both great at limiting fouling blow back due to their bottleneck design. I don't have much? trouble with .45 Colt because I use 250-grain bullets and a tight crimp. If you use 200-grain bullets in .45 you'll see more blowback. For me, .44 Colt and .44 Spl produce the most action fouling, and even they aren't bad.
