The blade enters the water at the hips, onside arm slightly bent and the torso rotated. The body then unwinds towards the offside pushing forward with the back side of the paddle. The blade then comes out at the toes. If you have rotated your torso properly, your offside arm should be reading to be dropped straight down to become the onside and the process repeats itself. Like? swimming every 2-4 strokes turn your head on the setup and look where you are going.

It's not bad form for the offside hand to cross the center line of the boat. In fact it's required for any draw, the stern steer, sweep and reverse stroke, also in waves or? wind, you need to keep the paddle as close to the boat as possible to allow you to maximize energy from the stroke and plant your blade deeply in the cresting wave. The critical point is to NOT have the offside hand pass the center of the torso - maintain your box! Otherwise you risk shoulder injury.

I have never been able to start from shore, maybe I'm heavier but that technique? never worked for me. Nobody I know does it that way either. Having the boaot in the water and yes your feet get wet, works best in my opinion. Just Start Kayaking.

You're right. Even the rivers he paddled earlier in his career are way more serious than towing into big waves. the same goes for some of these really tall drops too though. They are impressive but the threats are more about injury than? drowning. Rush Sturges and Steve Fischer just paddled the Congo river with like 1.5 million cfs. That makes this big wave thing seem like class 3. But whatever its still cool.

Also if you are looking to run some insane creeks than Check out Upper Otter Creek or Moore Run into lower Otter Creek? - They would need to be close to flood stage to run and early spring can be very difficult to get to the drop zone. The Blackwater and some of the forks are nice as well. It seems like there has been alot of fatalities on the Black this past year?? I hope you get to enjoy the rivers here in WV.

- all of them but there a few that stand out - Most would think the Gauley or the New River would be top choice for? kayaking but there are so many more. I don't kayak much so I like a more mellow river that I can canoe and carry gear for 2 or 3 nights. I go down the Shavers Fork - South Branch of the Potomac - Glady Fork and Gandy Creek. For backwoods kayaking I would recommend upper Shavers Fork, Dry Fork, Laural Fork, Lower Glady Fork, Otter Creek and Black Fork.

the reason for leaning back in the air is to balance the boat for an even landing, you must hit the snow at the correct angle so the will be no impact. also snow conditions have to be perfect to pull of airs of 30 or more feet. there is always the chance of injury but in all my nearly thousands of airs the only injury i sustained was breaking 3 ribs when i impacted a huge rock at 45MPH? and that run had no air, it was a steep couloir that had a really tricky exit.

It's a risk that is a part of the sport and we all take pre cautions to help protect our backs. This is an old old movie. If you notice how he was leaning back every time he went over a cliff it looked like a lot of impact when he landed. If you look at newer youtube movies, we have? developed ways to land properly that hurts a lot less. Never the less though, spine damage still occurs.

Hahh I take a lot of flak for that. I guess I was a competitive swimmer and I was used to wearing them. They dry quicker and in many ways are more convenient to use than neoprene or some big suit that does not dry out. However with all the flak I have taken, I have kind of figured out that non swimming mainstream culture thinks speedos are kind of weird or poofty. I am not trying to make any kind of statement...they dry fast? and they do not cause drag when swimming.

While kayaking in LA a sea lion was floating in the water. When he saw me he swam all around the kayak and eventually jumped on to the back, where he proceeded to eventually try to push me off with his chest. This video shows him before he got possessive.

This is almost certainly because a great white or a killer whale is just below. There are several other incidents where seal and pingvins? have jumped onboard boats when chesed by Apex predators.. Think about what time it was. It looked around late? afternoon in the video. So it points to either sharks( late afternoon to evening is their feeding time) or Orcas pods in the area. Although, because it was a seal, it would have to be transient Orcas. Which live in specific locations only moving to mate, while finding food. Transients usually are single Orcas up to 3 Orcas and move from Antarctica to the Arctic. So, because of the time of day it was most likely sharks. Which meant to the seal:

@robpealing. This is worth trying, but I find that swimming up onto the hull on the cockpit side of the paddle puts the paddler too far forward, making it difficult to get the legs in. If you slide the paddle to a position farther back on the boat, balance is compromised. That? said, a paddle float re-entry is not a "one size fits all" solution. Try different methods and see which works best for you.

True, the paddle-float rescue is very? difficult to impossible in rough waters. Paddlers who paddle alone in rough conditions would be wise to learn other self-rescue skills (including a roll, re-enter and roll, and cowboy). There is a danger that a paddler might gain false confidence by learning a paddle float self-rescue. But that does not mean that the paddle float self-rescue is a bad or useless technique. The reality is that, in conditions that are likely to put you in the water this rescue is completely useless......... the only effective self rescue is a roll....... or re-enter and roll at the least....... so start learning that and the skills to keep you up right in the first place rather than waste time on something that will just tire? you out and make you into a statistic.

I've heard (from the instructor? on this course I just did) a problem with sticking foot in boat to keep it from floating away while putting float on can be a wave smashing it and pulling it away from you with your leg stuck inside and injuring your leg. Don't know how relistic that scenario is, but I wear a pigtail and would probably just clip that onto a deck line while I worked if I was worried about loosing the boat.

One way to improve and make sure this rescue is more successful is to ensure that the end of the paddle you rest on the boat (ie, not with the? paddle float) goes underneath all of the deck cords (bungees and deck lines). This will secure this end in place on the boat for you. Certainly helpful in bigger conditions. Even better...learn the cowboy rescue....
